Our story

Built on 17 years of learning.

From a single classroom in 2009 to a network of campuses across two countries — the same conviction has guided every step.

    Founded

    CEMS Education is established with one founding campus and a vision: a school where curious children learn to understand the world.

  2. 2014

    Erbil campus opens

    Canadian International School — Erbil welcomes its first students, bringing the CEMS programme to the Kurdistan Region.

  3. 2018

    Cambridge programme

    Cambridge Checkpoint and IGCSE programmes launch, opening pathways to universities worldwide.

  4. 2021

    Advanced Placement

    College Board AP courses join the high school curriculum, available in CIS Erbil from day one.

  5. 2025

    Cognia accreditation

    The school passes external review against the Cognia Performance Standards — recognised across 80+ countries.
